The Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) has published its 10th assessment report on air quality in Europe. It provides valuable insights into air pollution levels and episodes recorded in Europe in 2024.
This CAMS assessment report provides policy users and air quality experts with a comprehensive and reliable description of the status of air quality in Europe, as well as insightful analysis of the origin of main pollution episodes during 2024.
Based on state-of-the-art air quality modelling combined with reference measurements carried out by Member States, this report offers a complementary perspective on observation-based insights.
European air quality is improving
Overall, air quality levels are improving over Europe, although there are still areas where EU air quality standards are not met.
Summer ozone levels remain stable over Europe despite Europe experiencing its hottest summer in 2024.
Particulate matter levels over most of Europe were lower than in previous years due to favourable meteorological conditions, with a wetter and warmer winter than average. In addition, the implementation of emission control strategies such as cleaner residential heating technologies is also considered to have played a relevant role.
Of all large-scale episodes, seven major air pollution episodes were selected for their severity and large-scale impact, and examined to determine their emission sources.
The origin of each event, anthropogenic or natural, is analysed in depth in the full report using a range of CAMS policy user products and source apportionment tools.

NILU has been responsible for this report together with colleagues from Ineris, Met Norway, TNO and ECMWF. Lobelia Earth developed the new graphical design.
“We are very pleased with the effort of the policy product group and the help from Lobelia Earth to produce a new visual design and convey key messages for this 10th edition of the report. We hope our stakeholders find this report both informative and useful”, says Leonor Tarrasón.
