NILU works on quantification of the environmental impacts of the energy technologies for single industrial plants and at the systemic level.
We support the development of new and innovative energy technologies by quantifying environmental hotspots in energy conversion technologies, such as carbon capture and storage technology or renewable energy technologies, thereby enabling environmentally friendly design and reduction of the potential for environmental problem shifting. We have a broad portfolio on studies related to energy production and consumption, as well as energy systems.

The 6C project
The 6C project aims to develop innovative materials for an efficient calcium-copper chemical looping process to produce electricity and heat. Within the project, NILU is responsible for the quantification of potential environmental impacts using Life Cycle Assessment. With the 6C project NILU builds on previous assessments done on both chemical looping and CCS technologies in the NewLoop and ProCCS projects.
Topic Centre of Climate change Mitigation and Energy
NILU is a partner in the European Topic Centre of Climate change Mitigation and Energy (ETC/CME) supporting the European Environment Agency (EEA). Among others, NILU is responsible for calculating the life cycle environmental impacts related to electricity production in the EU-28 and quantify the avoided greenhouse gas emissions due to increased use of renewable electricity generation.
