Building-related symptoms in school environment: Predictability using machine learning approach

Building-related symptoms (BRS) are commonly experienced by students in schools and are potentially affecting academic performance and health. Even though indoor environment quality (IEQ) measurements indicated fair conditions, students still perceived discomfort that led to symptoms, highlighting the necessity of collecting user-feedback about IEQ-complaints. This study aimed to predict and understand the prevalence of BRS (headache, tiredness, cough, dry eyes-hands) experienced by students in classrooms using machine-learning (ML) approach based on measurement data, building factors, and prevalence of IEQ-complaints. We collected measurement data (from indoor and outdoor climate), building factors, and user-feedback by students via online-platform across three sampled classrooms each campaign during three consecutive school semesters. Significant input variables for ML were pre-selected using statistical tests. ML models were evaluated based on accuracy metrics and SHAP analysis for input interpretation. Models using measurement data alone performed poorly (testing R² <50 %) to predict prevalence of BRS, whereas adding building factors and prevalence of IEQ-complaints increased accuracy (R² up to 95 %) of prediction of BRS with lower RMSE. In addition, interpretation from SHAP analysis showed IEQ-complaints especially related with indoor air quality (e.g., heavy air, dust & dirt, and dry air) as significant contributors for predicting prevalence of BRS. We conclude that the framework of combining objective measurements with occupant-reported complaints can be reliable, interpretable predictions of symptom prevalence. This study is limited by single-school setting, health confounders, and symptoms verification. Future research may contribute to exploring wider set of input variables, applicability, and variation of complaints preference.

Bruk av høyoppløselig massespektrometri for en uhildet kartlegging av organisk-kjemiske forurensning i nedbørfeltet til drikkevannskilden Gjersjøen

Denne rapporten beskriver en studie utført av NILU for Nordre Follo kommune, med støtte fra Folkehelseinstituttet. Målet var å prøve uhildet kartlegging som metode for å undersøke hvilke organisk-kjemiske forbindelser som finnes i nedbørfeltet til drikkevannskilden Gjersjøen. Som del av dette ønsket vi også å identifisere forbindelser som forårsaker feilaktige, store utslag i nitratsensorer. Ved bruk av høyoppløselig massespektrometri og miljøforensiske metoder ble 163 markører identifisert, inkludert aspirin, kreatin og kreatinin, knyttet til kloakkforurensning under kraftig nedbør. Funnene gir innsikt i kjemisk interferens og kan forbedre overvåkingssystemer og vannforvaltning.

Brominated Flame Retardants in Antarctic Air in the Vicinity of Two All-Year Research Stations

Continuous atmospheric sampling was conducted between 2010–2015 at Casey station in Wilkes Land, Antarctica, and throughout 2013 at Troll Station in Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica. Sample extracts were analyzed for polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and the naturally converted brominated compound, 2,4,6-Tribromoanisole, to explore regional profiles. This represents the first report of seasonal resolution of PBDEs in the Antarctic atmosphere, and we describe conspicuous differences in the ambient atmospheric concentrations of brominated compounds observed between the two stations. Notably, levels of BDE-47 detected at Troll station were higher than those previously detected in the Antarctic or Southern Ocean region, with a maximum concentration of 7800 fg/m3. Elevated levels of penta-formulation PBDE congeners at Troll coincided with local building activities and subsided in the months following completion of activities. The latter provides important information for managers of National Antarctic Programs for preventing the release of persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic substances in Antarctica.
