In this study, we investigate the current accuracy of widely used microplastic (MP) detection methods through an interlaboratory comparison (ILC) involving ISO-approved techniques. The ILC was organized under the prestandardization platform of VAMAS (Versailles Project on Advanced Materials and Standards) and gathered a large number (84) of analytical laboratories across the globe. The aim of this ILC was (i) to test and to compare two thermo-analytical and three spectroscopical methods with respect to their suitability to identify and quantify microplastics in a water-soluble matrix and (ii) to test the suitability of the microplastic test materials to be used in ILCs. Two reference materials (RMs), polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polyethylene (PE) as powders with rough size ranges between 10 and 200 μm, were used to press tablets for the ILC. The following parameters had to be assessed: polymer identity, mass fraction, particle number concentration, and particle size distribution. The reproducibility, SR, in thermo-analytical experiments ranged from 62%–117% (for PE) and 45.9%–62% (for PET). In spectroscopical experiments, the SR varied between 121% and 129% (for PE) and 64% and 70% (for PET). Tablet dissolution turned out to be a very challenging step and should be optimized. Based on the knowledge gained, development of guidance for improved tablet filtration is in progress. Further, in this study, we discuss the main sources of uncertainties that need to be considered and minimized for preparation of standardized protocols for future measurements with higher accuracy.

Assessing the environmental burden of disease related to air pollution in Europe in 2023
This report evaluates the environmental burden of disease (EBD) linked to long-term exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and ozone (O3) across 41 European countries in 2023. Using the key health indicators—attributable deaths, years of life lost, years lived with disability, and disability-adjusted life years—the analysis quantifies the health impacts of air pollution above concentrations defined as the World Health Organisation’s air quality guideline levels. Approximately 206,000 deaths are attributable to PM2.5, while about 56,000 and 71,000 deaths area attributable to NO2 and O3, respectively. The disease burden from PM2.5 was highest due to its association with multiple health outcomes, with high baseline prevalence and mortality. Results highlight strong regional disparities, with South-Eastern Europe most affected by health effects from PM2.5 and NO2, and Southern Europe by those from O3. Findings underscore the need for targeted policies to reduce pollutant-specific health impacts in Europe.

A pooled analysis of host factors that affect nucleotide excision repair in humans
Nucleotide excision repair (NER) is crucial for repairing bulky lesions and crosslinks in DNA caused by exogenous and endogenous genotoxins. The number of studies that have considered DNA repair as a biomarker is limited, and therefore one of the primary objectives of the European COST Action hCOMET (CA15132) was to assemble and analyse a pooled database of studies with data on NER activity. The database comprised 738 individuals, gathered from 5 laboratories that ran population studies using the comet-based in vitro DNA repair assay. NER activity data in peripheral blood mononuclear cells were normalized and correlated with various host-related factors, including sex, age, body mass index (BMI), and smoking habits. This multifaceted analysis uncovered significantly higher NER activity in female participants compared to males (1.08 ± 0.74 vs. 0.92 ± 0.71; P = .002). Higher NER activity was seen in older subjects (>30 years), and the effect of age was most pronounced in the oldest females, particularly those over 70 years (P = .001). Females with a normal BMI (<25 kg/m2) exhibited the highest levels of NER, whereas the lowest NER was observed in overweight males (BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2). No independent effect of smoking was found. After stratification by sex and BMI, higher NER was observed in smoking males (P = .017). The biological implication of higher or lower repair capacity remains unclear; the inclusion of DNA repair as a biomarker in molecular epidemiological trials should elucidate the link between health and disease status.

Microplastic pellets in Arctic marine sediments: a common source or a common process?
Plastic consumption is increasing, and millions of tonnes of plastic are released into the oceans every year. Plastic materials are accumulating in the marine environment, especially on the seafloor. The Arctic is contaminated with plastics, including microplastics (MPs, <5 mm) but occurrences, concentrations and fate are largely unknown. This study aimed at assessing whether MPs accumulate at greater water depths in the Barents Sea, and close to the Longyearbyen settlement, and at understanding the ubiquity and source of a specific type of collected pellets. Surface sediments were collected at seven stations around Svalbard with a box-corer, and three replicates were taken at each station. MPs were extracted through density separation with saturated saltwater. Many pellets were found, and their composition was assessed by pyrolysis-GC/MS. Procedural blanks were performed using field blanks as samples to assess the overall contamination. The composition of all extracted particles was then analysed by μRaman spectroscopy. On average, 3.61 ± 1.45 MPs/100 g (dw) were found. The sea ice station, after blank correction, was more contaminated and displaying a different profile than the other stations, and the deepest station did not show the highest MP concentrations but rather the opposite. Sediments close to Longyearbyen were not more contaminated than the other stations either. Dark pellets of similar aspect were found at all stations, raising the question about a possible common source or process. These pellets were made of several plastic polymers which varied in proportion for each pellet, suggesting a common process was at the origin of those pellets, potentially marine snow formation.

Wood building materials can be a source of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the indoor environment and increasing focus is put on classification and regulation of the use of wood building materials in Europe. The main wood related VOCs such as monoterpenes rarely pose adverse health effects for humans, but as analytical procedures become more sensitive new hazardous VOCs are detected in low concentration. There is a need for comprehensive identification of VOCs emitting from different wood building materials for indoor use. This study performed a first semi-quantitative non-target and suspect screening of VOC emissions from three important wood-based building materials in Europe. Air samples collected from emission chambers were analyzed using comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography coupled to time-of-flight mass spectrometry and resulting mass spectra were classified into confidence groups. A total of 84, 133 and 197 compounds were found to emit from cross-laminated timber, untreated spruce panel and untreated pine panel, respectively. Pine panel was found to emit a higher number of VOCs as well as higher concentrations of most VOCs compared to the spruce building materials. Several new VOCs were detected in the emission profile of pine and spruce. However, they were mostly structurally similar to previously reported wood VOCs. Two compounds of concern emitting from all three wood building materials were furfural and (E)-2-octenal, as these have been classified as group 2 carcinogen and potent eye irritant, respectively.

Abstract In this study, we evaluated the genomic stability of oral mucosal epithelial cells (OMECs) cultured in complex media (COM) and xenobiotic-free media (XF) to assess their potential clinical application for limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD) treatments. OMECs serve as a promising autologous cell source for bilateral LSCD treatment, offering an alternative to limbal epithelial cells (LECs). However, genomic integrity is crucial to ensure the long-term success of transplanted cells. We performed micronucleus (MNi) tests and comet assays to compare DNA damage in OMECs cultured in both media types. The results indicated no significant differences in cell morphology, viability, or size between the two conditions. The MNi frequency was similar, with 5.67 and 6.17 MNi per 1,000 cells in COM and XF conditions, respectively. Comet assay results showed low levels of strand breaks (SBs) and oxidized DNA lesions in both media, with XF showing a slightly lower, albeit statistically insignificant, percentage of tail DNA for net Fpg-sensitive sites. Our findings suggest that OMECs can be effectively cultivated in either COM or XF media without inducing significant DNA damage, supporting the potential use of XF media in clinical settings to reduce contamination risks. This study underscores the importance of genomic stability in cultured cells for ocular surface transplantation, contributing valuable insights into optimizing culture conditions for safer and more effective clinical applications.

Road traffic externalities are an important consequence of land-use and transport interactions and may be especially induced by their inefficient combinations. In this study, we integrate land-use, transport and emission modelling tools (the LUTEm framework) to assess how suburban expansion vs. inward densification scenarios influence journey parameters, road network performance and traffic emissions. Case-study simulations for Warsaw (Poland) underscore the negative consequences of suburban sprawl development, which are hardly mitigated by additional land-use or transport interventions, such as rebalancing of population-workplace distribution or road capacity reductions. On the other side, compact city development lowers global traffic congestion and emissions, but can also raise the risks of traffic externalities in central city area unless complemented with further interventions such as improved public transport attractiveness. This study aims to enrich the understanding of how integrating the land-use development and transport interventions can ultimately influence travel parameters and reduce urban road traffic externalities.
