Indoor air quality study for the Norwegian Embassy in Abu Dhabi. NILU OR

Tibi, N.; Sheikh Elhadadeen, T.

NILU has been asked by the Norwegian Embassy in Abu Dhabi to carry out an indoor air quality(IAQ) study. The results have shown that there is a big variation in the temperatures ( ¿10 C) between the monitored locations in the office. Data analysis from employees survey about indoor air have shown that employees do not feel comfortable with the temperature conditions. In addition mould growth was detected in Ambassador¿s office.
CO2 concentration exceeded the acceptable limit in two locations, because the ventilation system is not capable to provide sufficient amount of fresh air to the number of occupants. The conclusion was that the main problem was related to the unbalanced ventilation system creating improper air circulation leading to high CO2 concentrations and large differences in temperatures.

Assessment of traffic noise and mitigation options for Al Salam Street. NILU OR

Tibi, N.; Daham, B.; Shinbin, N.

Acting on request from the Abu Dhabi Municipality, Norwegian Institute for Air Research has been asked by the Abu Dhabi Municipality to evaluate the current noise levels on Salam Street and recommend mitigation measures to control the noise.

NILU provided traffic count data collected near the Sheikh Zayed Bridge and these were used in conjunction with an acoustic model to predict the existing noise conditions at 126 sensitive receptor locations. The predicted sound levels were compared to measured sound levels collected at seven (7) locations along Al Salam Street to validate the results of the modelling. This comparison showed strong correlation between the modelled and measured results.
Several mitigation options provided by NILU were incorporated into subsequent runs of the baseline model in order to predict the effectiveness of each option. It was found that the installation of a 5 m barrier adjacent to the outbound lanes of Al Salam Street would be the most effective individual mitigation option.

Indoor air quality investigation sector E3-02. NILU OR

Tibi, N.; Sheikh Elhadadeen, T.

Abu Dhabi Municipality has chosen the Norwegian Institute for Air Research (NILU) to perform indoor air quality investigation for six buildings in sector E3-02 (one School, one Mosque, one commercial building and three Residential building).
The main goal of this task is to define the main pollutants that could be found in the buildings and to define the status of existing buildings with respect to indoor air quality.
The results of measurements that were conducted at different locations have shown that there was a wide mold growth in the duct of ventilation system due to poor maintenance in all studied buildings, also that carbon dioxide (CO2) and voltaic organic compound (VOC) are considered the main pollutants that could found and affect the indoor air quality in these buildings.

In most of tested locations, the CO2 concentration has exceeded the standard limit, the readings were very high in the school, mosque, and to a lesser extent in commercial building.

SK-1401 Mongstad. Dispersion calculations. NILU OR

Tønnesen, D.; Berglen, T.F.

Norwegian Institute for Air Research (NILU) has performed dispersion calculations of emissions to air from stack SK-1401 at Mongstad refinery. Dispersion of CO2 and SO2 is calculated and analyzed. NILU has also evaluated the calculated concentrations from a HSE point of view, including life time/degradation of the components. The calculated concentrations have been added to existing background concentrations at Mongstad and the calculated total concentrations have been compared to air quality guidelines and threshold values. The defined Worst Case emission scenario exeeds the air quality limit for hourly concentrations of SO2. An alternative emission arrangement have been calculated, and this emission scenario does not exeed the air qualyi limit.

Ambient air quality in Abu Dhabi. 2011 annual report. NILU OR

El-Araby, T.

This Annual Report has been based on data from ten air quality monitoring stations operated in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi during 2011. The data have been ¿cleaned¿ and prepared as a basis for the statistics presented in this report. Air pollution in Abu Dhabi is dominated by suspended particles in the air. One of the main sources is linked to dust from the desert areas and to the occurrence of sand storms. Air Quality limit values for PM10 were exceeded at all monitoring sites in Abu Dhabi in 2011.
Limit values for 8-hour average ozone concentrations were also exceeded at all stations. Limit values for SO2, NO2 and CO were not exceeded in Abu Dhabi Emirate during 2011.

Environmental Management Report 2011. NILU OR

NILU.

One of NILU's main goals is to study the impact of pollution. It is thus very important for the institute to have control of the impact the institute¿s own activities may have on the environment and to reduce the impact as far as possible.

NILU has for many years been working to reduce the impact. In order to take this one step further, it was decided that the institute should restructure the work according to a relevant environmental standard and to seek certification according to the same standard.

The chosen standard is ISO 14001:2004 (Environmental management systems¿Requirements with guidance for use) and NILU achieved certification according to this standard in October 2010.
