Overvåking av langtransporterte atmosfæriske miljøgifter i luft og nedbør, årsrapport 2020.

Denne rapporten inkluderer miljøovervåkningsdata fra 2020 og tidstrender for programmet Langtransporterte atmosfæriske miljøgifter. Beregning av luftkvalitet ved Bjørnheimveien 26

Prem Partners II A/S has commissioned NILU to evaluate the extent of air quality zones for the present situation concerning a possible new residential building in Bjørnheimveien 26. A Gaussian dispersion model for line sources has been applied (Hiway-2). The road E6 is in this area running over a bridge. If the elevation of E6 and the terrain around Bjørnheimveien is considered, the calculations show a significant reduction in the extend of red and yellow air quality zones at ground level. The effect of shielding existing houses from air pollution by the new building is marginal. The calculations show agreement with the current air quality map for the area when the default assumption of flat terrain is applied.

Denne rapporten omhandler resultater fra overvåkningsprogrammet for langtransportert forurenset luft og nedbør og atmosfæriske tilførsler i 2020. Rapporten presenterer målinger av uorganiske hovedkomponentene i luft og nedbør, partikulært karbonholdig materiale, partikkelmasse og bakkenært ozon. Forurensningsnivået i 2020 var generelt lavt noe som delvis kan forklares med spesielle værforhold de første månedene med hovedsakelig ren, marin luft fra vest. De omfattende restriksjonene på menneskelig aktivitet i forbindelse med pandemien i Europa, har trolig også bidratt til lavere nivåer av luftforurensninger på de norske bakgrunnsstasjonene. I 2020 ble det observert en uvanlig omfattende episode med høye konsentrasjoner av luftforurensing på alle stasjoner.

Maximizing output from non-target screening

The purpose of this project is to dig deeper into the data material already generated in the Suspect screening in Nordic countries: Point sources in city areas (TemaNord: 2017:561) to further optimize the benefits of the major work that has already been done. Samples (effluent, sediment, and biota) from all of the Nordic countries were carefully selected, sampled and analysed by a consortium of some of the Nordic region’s most experienced scientific groups in analyses of emerging environmental contaminants. But where perhaps the full potential of the generated data is still to be realized. This project will try to further identify and describe the substances already detected, to be able to better understand what substances we in modern Nordic societies release into the sea via our wastewater.

The nickel smelters in northwest-Russia emitted large quantities of sulphur dioxide (SO2) and heavy metals. These emissions lead to enhanced concentrations of environmental pollutants in the border areas. The monitoring programme shows that air quality in the border areas was in compliance with Norwegian critical levels for SO2 for the calendar year 2020, as well as for seasonal mean for the winter 2019/20. The smelter in Nikel ceased operation on 23 December 2020. This will give less pollution in the border areas in the future. Target values for Ni, As and Cd were not exceeded.

PAH measurements at Lista. January 2020 – December 2020.

NILU – Norsk institutt for luftforskning har, på oppdrag fra Aluminiumindustriens Miljøsekretariat (AMS) og Alcoa Lista, tatt PAH-prøver i omgivelsene til Alcoa Lista aluminiums-smelteverk for å oppdatere kunnskapen om PAH-konsentrasjoner rundt smelteverket i dag. Prøvene ble tatt i perioden januar – desember 2020 og analysert for partikkelbundne PAHer. Som en konsekvens av reduserte utslipp sammenlignet med tidligere målinger, er konsentrasjonen av benzo(a)pyren (BaP) redusert. Årsmiddelet av BaP-konsentrasjonen i 2020 var under målsettingsverdien på begge prøvetakingsstedene. På Huseby ble den nedre vurderingsterskelen overskredet. PAH-konsentrasjonen i området på samme nivå som i norske byer.

Rapporten oppsummerer resultatene fra ekstra analyser av snøprøver samt pågående overvåkingsaktiviteter i forbindelse med rakettoppskytingen i Ny-Ålesund 7. desember 2018, 26. november 2019 og 10. desember 2019 for å dokumentere mulige påvirkninger av rakettoppskyting på miljøet og overvåkingsaktivitetene i Ny-Ålesund. Det observeres en økt avsetning av Al og Fe i Ny-Ålesund-området som skyldes utslipp fra rakettoppskytingen.

Målinger av SO2 i omgivelsene til Elkem Carbon og REC Solar. Januar 2020 – desember 2020.

On behalf of Elkem Carbon AS, NILU has carried out measurements of SO2 in the surroundings of Elkem Carbon and REC Solar in Vågsbygd (Kristiansand municipality). The companies were ordered by the Norwegian Environment Agency to carry out SO2-measurements in ambient air. The measurements were performed with an SO2-monitor in the residential area at
Fiskåtangen (Konsul Wilds vei) and with passive SO2-samplers at 6 locations around the industries. The report covers
measurements in the period 1 January 2020 – 31 December 2020.
Norwegian limit values for air quality (SO2) were complied with at Konsul Wilds vei for all averaging periods required by the air quality directive (annual average, winter average, daily average and hourly average). The most polluted locations during the measurement period were Konsul Wilds vei and Fiskåveien just south of the industries.

Målinger av PM10 i Lohavn. April og mai 2020.

On behalf of Hav Eiendom, NILU – Norwegian Institute for Air Research carried out measurements of particulate matter (PM10) in Lohavn in Oslo. The area will be developed into a new urban area with residential buildings, school, outdoor areas and businesses. The PM-concentration was measured at three locations in Lohavn to map the PM-distribution and possible sources. The measurement project took place in spring 2020. Possible effects of Covid-shutdown, variations in amount of traffic in the area and meteorological variations on the PM concentration are discussed.

The measurement results show a lower PM-concentration than in the measurement period 2016/17. The reason was probably the disappearance of temporary sources which led to periodically high concentrations in 2016/17. The highest PM10-concentrations were observed with winds from the south-southwest (which dominates during the day).

Transport Non-exhaust PM-emissions. An overview of emission estimates, relevance, trends and policies.

The report holds a comprehensive literature review on the non-exhaust PM emission from transport. All types of wear particles are considered (brake, tyre, road surface) and all modes (road, rail, aviation), with strong emphasis on road. The report serves as an input to review current emission inventories, summarizing the current emission estimates, the estimation methodologies, uncertainties and future trends, briefly zooming in on the relevance of electric vehicles. The report considers both air quality as well as the relevance of non-exhaust emission as a source of microplastics. To conclude, the report includes a brief overview of technological and policy options to reduce the environmental impact.
